9 versus 5

This time I used the relief design of an artwork was creating in 2016. The oak wood of the artwork started to warp, so I did not finish it then. Now, the blocks are glued on okoumé ply wood, which is unlikely to warp.
The structure has a 5 mm height on the 'inside' and a 9 mm height around the 5 mm blocks. This results in a nice transition between 9 and 5.

Three Chills

For this artwork, I started with a rough wooden board and built a relief with three focus points. This makes this different from a lot of my other works where I use just one focus point.

Obey the Algorithm

'Obey the Algorithm' contains a rather shallow structure built up from thin strokes. The strokes are all two millimeter too short to fit the maze design. This resulted in a consequent inconvenience.

This artwork has a complex structure based on the 'braid' algorithm for generating mazes. The blocks are cut from a melted piece of styrodur.
Base colour is plain red. Lighter orange nuances are added in the middle. The edges are finished with mat varnish.

A new relief structure that resulted from applying two algorithms. For maze design, Prim's algorithm is followed. When glueing the overlaying styrodur strips, I applied an uncompromised order from the middle to the edges. This lead to an exciting structure as you can see on the photo's.

Each block is a unique, individual part of each labyrinthz artwork. I decided to emphasize this to count them and use the number of blocks in the title. The relief is based on the Kruskal algorithm, the heights and the colornuances of the blocks are varying rhythmically.

Break-even

|
This artwork is going back to the white tradition. It contains interesting subtle brushstrokes white nuances. Unfortunately this is very hard to see in these photo's. This is the difference in seeing an artwork on a computerscreen and seeing it for reaal! I hope you enjoy it anyway. . . It's called Break-even.
The maze structure is created from blocks that all have even sizes (2, 4, 6, etc cm). It follows the 'perfect' algorithm for generating mazes.

Curvatures

Thin eight millimeter strips are stacked where they meet. In the middle of the board, the strips are a bit thicker than on the sides. These strips are glued with weights on them, which caused them to bend. I called it 'Curvatures'.

One way and no other
|
|
This work is called 'One way and no other'. It's a unicursal maze, technically, a labyrinth because there is only one way to walk through it. I painted this with soft silky lime nuances which is unfortunately hard to capture exactly the right way on the photo's. Anyway, just like all art you gotta see it for real, not just on a screen!

The Algorhythm
|

This time I applied the algorithm 'binary tree' for generating mazes. This resulted in a maze that starts in one corner and flows out to the other corners. After a 45 degree rotation, the maze starts at the bottom and grows rhythmic to the top (like a tree!). I named this artwork 'The Algorhythm'.
