Again I am proud to show you a new artwork! This time I wanted to try a new type of base board with 'double' edges. To get those edges, I glued two thin wooden boards together. In the -inverted- maze relief, there is a prevelance for vertical above horizontal blocks. Base colour is olive. Black and yellow nuances are added. Unfortunalely, this is hard to see on these photo's, but it really makes the paintwork alive. Enjoy 'Verticality'! Just finished: '541 decisions'! Each block is a unique, individual part of each labyrinthz artwork. I decided to emphasize this to count them and use the number of blocks in the title. The relief is based on the Kruskal algorithm, the heights and the colornuances of the blocks are varying rhythmically. Swipe to see more! This time I used the relief design of an artwork was creating in 2016. The oak wood of the artwork started to warp, so I did not finish it then. Now, the blocks are glued on okoumé ply wood, which is unlikely to warp. The structure has a 5 mm height on the 'inside' and a 9 mm height around the 5 mm blocks. This results in a nice transition between 9 and 5. Enjoy the photo's! Back to black! This artwork is based on a 'formicary', which I found at the Koningshof parc, Overveen, Netherlands. It took a while to complete this complex millimetrized maze, but now it's finished. Simplicity called 'se7en'. An almost black artwork with a shiny structure. Towards the edge a plain chalky surface. The relief is build up from 7 x 7 segments with 7 millimeter thick walls. This artwork is going back to the white tradition. It contains interesting subtle brushstrokes white nuances. Unfortunately this is very hard to see in these photo's. This is the difference in seeing an artwork on a computerscreen and seeing it for reaal! I hope you enjoy it anyway. . . It's called Break-even. The maze structure is created from blocks that all have even sizes (2, 4, 6, etc cm). It follows the 'perfect' algorithm for generating mazes. Thin eight millimeter strips are stacked where they meet. In the middle of the board, the strips are a bit thicker than on the sides. These strips are glued with weights on them, which caused them to bend. I called it 'Curvatures'. Swipe, enjoy the photo's and turn your sound to the max! Working 3 to 5! Again I have been working hard to complete another wallsculpture. Now, the thickness of the walls had to vary from three to five millimeter. This turned the sculpture into a puzzle where still I wanted to connect the walls smoothly. So I have been very busy, even on my birthday, I kept working! This new work is called 'One way and no other'. It's a unicursal maze, technically, a labyrinth because there is only one way to walk through it. I painted this with soft silky lime nuances which is unfortunately hard to capture exactly the right way on the photo's. Anyway, just like all art you gotta see it for real, not just on a screen! This time I applied the algorithm 'binary tree' for generating mazes. This resulted in a maze that starts in one corner and flows out to the other corners. After a 45 degree rotation, the maze starts at the bottom and grows rhythmic to the top (like a tree!). I named this artwork 'The Algorhythm'. Like it or not! This time an experiment with a maze on a round board. The rough maze structure is cut from one melted/burned piece of hardfoam. Finally, loads of chalkpaint is dropped on the structure, which results in nice cracks after drying in the sun! Enjoy: Algorithms colliding! Finished today: The Finest Algorithm! This time I used my favourite algorithm for generating mazes. This algorithm, which is invented by an American mathematician Joseph Kruskal, results in a nicely balanced maze. For relief structure, I used heated hardfoam and paint cracks and brushes. Labyrinthz artwork number 56 is finished! I called it 'Ochre loops'. Not as spaghetti-like as planned, but still an exciting chaotic structure. Back in my days at the university, I learned some strategies (algorithms) to solve problems like finding a way out through a maze. On my artwork Barry's White I applied one strategy called 'left hand search'. I used colored blocks to make the algorithm visible on the photo. The entrance of the maze is at the bottom, the exit is at the top. Each time a decision for a direction has to be made, the left side is chosen. If the path ends, the next turn left is taken. This results in finding a rather efficient way out as shown on the photo. The red blocks represent visited paths, the yellow blocks represent the path to the way out at the top.
